I thought it might be interesting to provide the readers with a list of the American Cardinals, their ages and voting status within the College, as well as their present appointments or, in the case of those retired from office, their titles and residences.
And so, in alphabetical order, those members of the College of Cardinals who are American are the following.
Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, born June 30, 1948. At 69 years of age, Cardinal Burke is eligible to vote in Conclave. His position as Patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta is uncertain at the present moment.
Blase Joseph Cardinal Cupich, born March 19, 1949. At 68 years of age, Cardinal Cupich is eligible to vote in Conclave. He presently serves as Archbishop of Chicago.
Daniel Nicholas Cardinal DiNardo, born May 23, 1949. At 67 years of age, Cardinal DiNardo is eligible to vote in Conclave. He presently serves as Archbishop of Galveston-Houston and is President of the United State Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan, born February 6, 1950. At 67 years of age, Cardinal Dolan is eligible to vote in Conclave. He presently serves as Archbishop of New York.
Kevin Joseph Cadinal Farrell, born September 2, 1947. At 69 years of age, Cardinal Farrell is eligible to vote in Conclave. He presently serves as Prefect of the newly-created Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life in the Roman Curia.
James Michael Cardinal Harvey, born October 20, 1949. At 67 years of age, Cardinal Harvey is eligible to vote in Conclave. He presently serves as Archpriest of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome.
Bernard Francis Cardinal Law, born November 4, 1931. At 85 years of age, Cardinal Law is no longer eligible to vote in Conclave. He is retired from active ministry holding the title of Archpriest Emeritus of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome.
William Joseph Cardinal Levada, born June 15, 1936. At 81 years of age, Cardinal Levada is no longer eligible to vote in Conclave. He is retired from active ministry holding the title of Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
Roger Michael Cardinal Mahoney, born February 27, 1936. At 81 years of age, Cardinal Mahoney is no longer eligible to vote in Conclave. He is retired from active ministry holding the title of Archbishop Emeritus of Los Angeles.
Adam Joseph Cardinal Maida, born March 18, 1930. At 87 years of age, Cardinal Maida is no longer eligible to vote in Conclave. He is retired from active ministry holding the title of Archbishop Emeritus of Detroit.
Theodore Edgar Cardinal McCarrrick, born July 7 1930. At 87 years of age, Cardinal McCarrick is no longer eligible to vote in Conclave. He is retired from active ministry holding the title of Archbishop Emeritus of Washington, DC.
Edwin Frederick Cardinal O’brien, born July 8, 1939. At 78 years of age, he is eligible to vote in Conclave. He presently serves as Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem with residence in Rome.
Sean Patrick Cardinal O’Malley, born June 29, 1944. At 73 years of age, Cardinal O’Malley is eligible to vote in Conclave. He presently serves as Archbishop of Boston.
Justin Francis Cardinal Rigali, born April 19, 1935. At 82 years of age, Cardinal Rigali is not eligible to vote in Conclave. He is retired from active ministry holding the title of Archbishop Emeritus of Philadelphia.
James Francis Cardinal Stafford, born July 26, 1932. At 84 years of age, Cardinal Stafford is no longer eligible to vote in Conclave. He is retired from active ministry holding the title of Major Penitentiary Emeritus of the Apostolic Penitentiary with residence in Rome.
Joseph William Cardinal Tobin, born May 3, 1952. At 65 years of age, Cardinal Tobin is eligible to vote in Conclave. He presently serves as Archbishop of Newark.
Donald William Cardinal Wuerl, born November 12, 1940. At 76 years of age, Cardinal Wuerl is eligible to vote in Conclave. He continues to serve as Archbishop of Washington, DC.
In summation, there are presently17 American Cardinals, of whom 10 are eligible to vote in Conclave.
