Here is a photo of what Pope Francis carried in procession at the opening Mass of the Youth Synod.
Can you imagine the reaction of the Cardinals and Bishops, the Clergy and laity in attendance?
Must have been something since you can already find an apologetic explanation that this "thing" is a ferula, used by Bishops in place of a crozier.
But here's a photo of what a ferula really is supposed to look like.
Always, always....the ferulum (or ferula) staff has a Cross or Crucifix at the top.
One article I read said the Pope was given this by one of the youth attending the Synod.
My response: So what?
Already the Synod's Working Document (instrumentum laboris) which forms the agenda of topics the Synod Fathers (and others) will discuss makes no reference these two words: "Jesus" or "Christ".
Noting that fact and seeing this abomination of symbolism which removes the Cross from the public veneration of those attending Mass, I get a rather sickly feeling of what is happening within the Body of Christ.
Something is amiss, for sure.
Saint Paul admonishes the Church to teach Christ, and Him Crucified.
When we remove Our Lord both symbolically and in terms of His Words and Wisdom to the Church, something is terribly awry.
What IS happening?
